Liver Scans

Liver scans are vital to understanding liver health as they provide a snapshot of a person's health status. It is part of the screening process for various liver diseases such as fibrosis, cirrhosis, and fatty liver disease.

First, what is a liver scan?

A liver scan consists of using an elastography machine that takes ultrasound images of the liver to detect for liver stiffness and any liver fat. It is non-invasive and painless, and take roughly 15 minutes to conduct the imaging. For more accurate results, it is recommended that to do the following preparation:

  • No eating for 3 hours minimum before your scan
  • No drinking, except for water
  • If you currently take medication, please continue to do so as it will not interfere with your results.
